SPDT Relay Wiring Explained

SPDT (Single Pole / Double Throw) Relay - Form C

Many of you have asked me to explain how the SPDT relay is wired for your fans, fuel pumps and a host of other automotive electrical needs. As you ask for these, I have posted them on our forum and website. It is fine to see the entire circuit, but I thought that you would better understand the relay if you could see it work switched and unswitched.

This relay has posts 30 & 87a internally connected. When switched, the path changes to posts 30 & 87 and 87a becomes an open circuit.

Switching the relay is accomplished by issuing a ground and 12v on posts 85 and 86.

This is the SPDT relay in it's unswitched / unlatched state. Notice that the path of the input is from post 30 to 87a
This is the SPDT relay in it's switched / latched state. Notice that the path of the input is from post 30 to 87a once the ground is applied to post 86.
